Skype and email counselling are relatively new - although I remember my first email clients and that was over a decade ago now?! Both Skype and email are cheaper than regular in-office counselling, yet can be just as effective.
The benefits of working with body language is often balanced by the ability to read between the lines or read and re-read emails - very often learning needs a slower or repetitive pace. One of the most valuable goals of counselling is for you to slow down and pull apart your jumbled thoughts and find your own answers. And often this is achieved best by email and Skype.
Scheduling Skype is often easier than trying to find time in your schedule to go to your counsellor's office for an appointment. Just email me and suggest a choice of two times that suit you. I will try and accept one of your times. Scroll down to see details of rates and link to PayPal.
And email counselling is easier still to schedule. Tossing and turning at 3 o'clock in the morning? Journal your thoughts in an email and send it off to me. Then sleep like a log (you'll be surprised!) and when you wake up, check your email for my reply. A combination of email and Skype can be very effective indeed - perhaps rivalling sessions in the office…
Why Skype or Email Counselling:
- Trouble finding time to attend in-person counselling sessions due to work schedule, childcare or transportation
- Do you live in a small town where privacy is a concern
- Simply prefer the convenience of finding professional help in the comfort of your own home
- Live in a remote area that lacks the services you need
Skype consultations or email counselling might be a great alternative to in-person counselling for you? Scroll down to see details of rates and link to PayPal.
What is a Skype consultation?
Phone counselling (with or without video) is a successful way of connecting for those who want professional help but can't or don't want to attend in-person sessions. An added benefit is a higher degree of anonymity. It allows people to get the support, guidance and help they need in the comfort of their own home or while traveling. Phone counselling is also a good alternative for individuals already struggling with anxiety over their situation as it allows clients to be in their own, familiar environment.
How to set up a session with me via Skype:
Skype software is free to download and free to use. Click on the link here to download it. You can choose whether to turn on the video option and Skype offers free calls from Skype to Skype users. Scroll down to see details of rates and link to PayPal.
Skype allows you to feel as though you are face-to-face with your counsellor.
- Download Skype for free: http://www.skype.com/intl/en/
- Email me to set up a day/time and length of your appointment.
- Make payment through PayPal:
- Add my Skype name NetCounsellorSkype to your contact list.
- Before our session I will send you a short Intake form and two other forms which describe the limits of confidentiality during our sessions and the ethical guidelines I am bound by.
- At the time agreed for our appointment, open your Skype and click on my name in your contacts list.
- I will be online, awaiting your call.
Your session can be with or without video (your choice) and will last at least 50 minutes - probably a little longer.
Please note: Time lost due to dropped calls or other technical difficulties will be made up either by simply reconnecting and continuing or by adding that time to your next session.
Are Skype/email counselling confidential?
Protecting your identity is of great importance and I double-delete all reference to your name after each session, excepting the record of your Skype name connected to me (unless you request that I remove that too). Guaranteeing 100% protection is not possible with Skype or email counselling although I can make sure that no record of the content of our conversation is kept. Securing privacy on your end is also important and is your responsibility.
The same standards and guidelines used for in-person counselling apply to Skype or email counselling and prior to our first session I will send you a short Intake sheet and an explanation of what you can expect from counselling and the limitations of confidentiality.
I look forward to meeting you! If you should have any other questions please feel free to email them to me - scroll down to see details of rates and link to PayPal.

If you like analogies (I tend to use them a lot...) this is a particularly nice one:
Sometimes I'm 'stuck' with this (website) project but my website developer son (MidnightDonkey) is able to point me in the right direction, confident of what he's doing - because it's what he does for a living. He's able to give me a gentle shove - and it saves me hours of my time. He listens to my problem and knows where I need to go next to solve it. Unlike me, he knows how and is able to guide me. I trust him and with his help I have achieved much more than I ever could have alone.
Building websites is his area of strength: Building people is mine.
Write to me and let's work out your next step together. I am a registered counsellor with the Canadian Professional Counselling Association, specializing in ReBuilding lives after trauma and we can connect by email whether you are local to me or in UK, NZ, USA, CA or OZ. I also love to work with couples, relationship issues, sexual issues, family of origin issues and individual growth.
I look forward to hearing from you!
